Invictus Games

25 April 2022

From April 16th to April 22nd, 2022, the Invictus Games took place in the Zuiderpark in The Hague. Five hundred physically and/or mentally injured soldiers from 20 different countries took part in 10 different sports. This edition was supposed to take place in 2020, but was postponed to 2022 due to covid-19. In 2022, The Hague is the European Capital of Sport, which made the event extra special.

Prince Harry is the initiator of the Invictus games, which first took place in 2014. Invictus literally means unconquered. The aim of the games is to increase understanding and respect for the soldiers who serve or have served their country. The power of sport is used to stimulate recovery and support rehabilitation. The main focus of the days were the participants and their friends and family.

The Hague is the fifth city to host the Invictus Games. Unlike before, during this edition all accommodations and activities were centralized in one place; in the Zuiderpark. This was so well received that it has become the new standard. The yellow bench was also introduced during this edition, with the intention that all over the world yellow benches will be placed. The idea behind the yellow bench is that this will be a place designed to listen to each other.

The edition was a very big success; with almost a hundred thousand visitors!
