Living Lab Scheveningen

8 July 2022

The boulevard of Scheveningen is a dynamic place where many people come together to live, work or relax. On this small surface, all relevant components for governing and managing a city are present; the harbour, the fish market, tourist attractions, a nature reserve and of course the beach. For these reasons, the Smart City team of the municipality of The Hague determined that Scheveningen was the perfect location for a 'Living Lab'. Living Lab Scheveningen is a test environment where the municipality, companies, residents and research institutions look for smart and digital inventions to solve societal challenges. The final goal? Making the environment more pleasant; think of safety, sustainability, social cohesion, economy and mobility.

What kind of smart and digital inventions are we talking about? A good example is a digital sign that tells beachgoers whether the seawater is safe for swimming based on real-time information. Another innovation is a self-driving waste robot that picks up cigarette butts from the sand. This way they are not eaten by the birds and do not end up in the sea. Another example is the introduction of the intelligent light tower. It passes on maintenance request by itself and adapts the power consumption according to the circumstances.

At the end of 2021, Living Lab Scheveningen won the Energy and Environment Award during the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. About 700 cities from countries around the world participated in this convention. The prize emphasizes how innovatively The Hague is working towards a safe, sustainable and liveable city.

The Living Lab Scheveningen is a great program which contributes to various SDGs. It keeps the coast healthy, makes the environment safer and more pleasant and protects the sea.
