Resilience Team of the Municipality of The Hague

8 July 2022

The Hague is a fast-growing city; it is expected that there will be more than 600.000 inhabitants by the year 2030. In addition to this growth, there are other major challenges, such as rising energy prices, climate change, digital transition, inequality, etc. In order to meet all these challenges, The Hague joined the Global Resilient Cities Network (GRCN) in 2016. This network helps cities around the world to prepare for the physical, social and economic challenges of the 21st century. The aim is to make The Hague resilient; ready for the future.

The Resilience Strategy includes initiatives to make the city resilient. Resilient cities are prepared for shocks and stresses, and can then grow and prosper again. Shocks are acute threats that disrupt the city. This includes acute threats that are specific to The Hague, such as cyber-attacks, consequences of extreme weather, disruption of public order, pandemics, terrorist threats and the failure of vital services. Stresses are factors that slowly weaken the city and can eventually lead to disruption. For The Hague, this concerns climate change, poverty and debt, segregation, health inequalities, digitalization, population growth, transport network limitations, unemployment and subversive crime.

The Resilience Team of The Hague works together with the inhabitants of the city to make them resilient. For the various initiatives, see the website

Two examples of projects that the Resilience team is working on (Streetlab and Digitaal Veilig in de Wijk) are described below. The Resilience team is currently also reassessing its strategy. The strategy will be broken down into all the transitions that The Hague must go through as a city to become a strong, inclusive, social and resilient city.

Digital Security in the Neighborhood

Digital crime numbers are growing and it is therefore important that residents of cities are better able to defend themselves against this form of crime. In this context, the 'Digital Safe in the Neighborhood' program was established, which is supported by the municipality of The Hague and the Police Unit of The Hague. Read more about Digital Security in the Neighborhood here

Streetlab

We are facing more and more challenges: a pandemic, climate change, increasing inequality. It is therefore important that the city of The Hague and its inhabitants are resilient. In this context, the Resilience Streetlab of the municipality of The Hague was launched in January 2022. During this project, the municipality, residents and other partners work together to increase the resilience of Noorderbeekdwarsstraat in The Hague. Read more about Streetlab here.
