Urban Agriculture The Hague
24 June 2022
Everybody knows them; the famous allotments. But did you know that allotments are not the only form of urban agriculture? There are also neighborhood gardens, urban beekeepers and urban farms. And it is a good thing that there are many different forms of urban agriculture, because urban agriculture is very beneficial for a city.
You might have noticed it: people nowadays have little connection to the food chain. Because products are available all year round in the supermarket, most people don’t know which products are harvested in which seasons anymore. And because of misleading advertising, many people have no idea what is healthy and what is not. By becoming more involved with food, knowledge about nutrition increases. Greater knowledge about nutrition often leads to healthier choices. More people will therefore eat fresh and sustainable products. This also ensures that the food chain becomes shorter and thus reduces the use of raw materials.
Besides the fact that urban agriculture contributes to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle and consumption and production, it also ensures a better connection between the inhabitants of a city. Allotments, community gardens and city farms give residents a sense of safety, security and increase social control in a neighbourhood.
As you can see, urban agriculture contributes to many different SDGs, such as: 2,3,7,11,12 and 13.
