SDG 1: No Poverty
End Poverty in All Its Forms Everywhere
SDG 1 is about ending poverty. Everyone has the right to economic resources, such as education and technology. Poverty has a negative impact on people's well-being. It is known, for example, that people who live below the povery line for a long period of time, have a shorter life expectancy. They will live five years shorter on average. The difference in healthy life years is even fourteen years (CBS, 2019).
How The Hague Contributes
Similar to the other large cities in the Netherlands, around 20% of households in The Hague live below the poverty line. The municipality is committed in several ways to reduce inequality and combat poverty. The Hague's poverty policy is aimed, among other things, at getting rid of deficits so that there is an acceptable minimum subsistence level. In addition, the policy is also about empowering people to escape survival mode and to make progress. Read more about poverty reduction in The Hague (Dutch).
