SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth and Productive and Decent Work for All

SDG 8 focuses on sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Everyone must be given the opportunity of decent work under good working conditions. SDG 8 should also protect labor rights and increase economic productivity. However, this economic growth must not lead to environmental degradation.

How The Hague Contributes

As the seat of the national government and as the city of peace and justice, The Hague has an extensive public sector with a large number of jobs. In addition, the city stimulates innovative companies that make a positive impact on society. The Hague is positioned between the cities Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam. These cities all have prestigious universities. This brings many opportunities for companies and talent to meet here in The Hague.

However, both a shortage on the labor market and unemployment are a problem in The Hague. This gap between supply and demand on the labor market is being tackled through various initiatives of the Human Capital Agenda Zuid-Holland.

Initiatives in The Hague

Impact City

The Impact City program of the Municipality of The Hague was launched in 2015 and supports startups & scale-ups in The Hague by offering a wide range of services (such as access to finance and profiling) and a large international network. Read more about Impact City here. As a result of the growth of those businesses, new quality jobs are created.

The Young Digitals

The Young Digitals believes that every young person has a talent. They grow up in a world of digitization and social media and that world is where their opportunities lie.

Unfortunately, large groups of young people do not complete their education or they get stuck in finding a good job for other reasons. Without help, these young people get increasingly more distanced from the labor market.

It is the mission of The Young Digitals to guide these young people to a job as digital marketer. Young people are offered free training of 10 weeks, valuable work experience and guidance towards a new employer.

In short, The Young Digitals offers new opportunities, from training to the future.
